New Zealand batter Tom Latham was the star on Day 3 of the second Test match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at Colombo as his unbeaten 111 helped the visitors get close to Lanka's first innings total of 244.

The visitors, who are trailing the series 0-1 were 196 for 4 at the end of Day 3 in the first innings, and trail the hosts by only 48 runs on a track that has started assisting the spinners.

Latham, along with Watling, who was batting on 25 at the end of Day 3, have added 70 runs for the fifth wicket and will be looking to add to their tally.

After Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson fell cheaply yet again and Ross Taylor followed soon after, New Zealand were in a spot of bother as they slumped to 126 for 4. However, the duo of Latham and Watling ensured there were no further casualties.

Latham was the second player to get a hundred in the game, after Dhananjaya de Silva got his ton earlier in the day. It was his fifth Test hundred, and it helped his team over the 240-run mark.
