Sri Lanka managed 85 for 2 on the opening day of the second and final Test against New Zealand at Colombo on Thursday.
Sri Lanka managed 85 for 2 on the opening day of the second and final Test against New Zealand at Colombo on Thursday. Opener Lahiru Thirimanne and Kusal Mendis were the batters dismissed, with Angelo Mathews and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne at the crease.
Karunaratne continued his good form, as he was unbeaten on 49 on Day 1, with Mathews yet to open his account. Only 36.3 overs of play were possible on the day as bad light and rain affected proceedings.
The hosts, who won the first game, started off cautiously after they won the toss and decided to bat first. Though the conditions were overcast, the Kiwi bowlers got no help as the Lankans kept them at bay. It was upto William Somerville to pick up the first wicket - when he picked Thirimanne.
Karunaratne, who had scored 122 in the last game, then got together with Mendis as the duo added 50 for the second wicket. The latter fell for 32, with Colin de Grandhomme getting his wicket.
Both teams made one change to their playing XI, with de Grandhomme replacing Mitchell Santner, and Dilruwan Perera replacing Akila Dananjaya, who picked up 5 wickets in the last game. However, he was reported for suspect action by the umpires, and his omission seems to stem from that.
