Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis, who was the earliest recipient of the tag of 'mystery spinner' has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The cricketer played 19 Tests, 87 ODIs and 39 T20Is, and picked up 288 wickets across formats. He last turned out for his national team in 2015.

Mendis had a dream debut season, as he shot to the limelight after picking up six wickets against a strong Indian unit in the Asia Cup in 2008. His carrom ball helped him pick up 48 wickets in 18 ODIs in his first season of international cricket, and his Test returns were phenomenal as well. He was on fire against India, picking up 26 wickets in only three games against the neighbours.

He also left an impact in the shortest format, picking up two six-wicket hauls, including 6 for 16 against Australia in 2011 and best figures of 6 for 8 against Zimbabwe a year later at Hambantota.

However, as the batters started reading Mendis' variations, his form declined and subsequently, he struggled to hold on to his place. He was eventually sidelined, and since then struggled to make an impact in the game.
