Shikhar Dhawan: Was heartbreaking to leave the World Cup 2019 due to injury
Shikhar Dhawan had been injured during India's second World Cup game, and was ruled out of the edition thereafter. He played his first game after recovering from injury against West Indies in the first T20I, but could only score 1.
Shikhar Dhawan stated that it was heartbreaking to leave the Cricket World Cup 2019 mid-way due to a fractured thumb. Returning to the team after almost 2 months, the left-hander opened about the disappointment of getting ruled out after playing just two games in the edition.
Dhawan had scored a hundred against Australia in India's second World Cup game - the same match where a Pat Cummins delivery climbed onto his thumb and fractured it. He was initially not ruled out of the World Cup as he hoped he would recover in time for the semis. However, he eventually was ruled out.
"Was heartbreaking to leave the World Cup with an injury. It was a jolt to me and the team. Did rehab in Bangalore, fully fit and fine. Feeling good. Boys in a positive mindset. Mentally we're all switched on and confident. T20 World Cup is coming up, preparation for that starts now," Dhawan said just minutes before the first T20I in Lauderhill, Florida.
Earlier, Virat Kohli stated that the disappointment of losing in the semis of the World Cup was still fresh in the minds, but the team was trying hard to move on from the heartbreak.
"Teams have moved on, first few days were difficult when the tournament was going on. But you accept it and life goes on. We are pretty fine now had a good exciting fielding session the day before and everyone is excited to take the field now. Look the priority will always be winning, but in that process you need to try out combinations and trust your players and expect them to perform under pressure, that's what international cricket is all about.
"Walk into the team, cement your place, grab the opportunity with both hands, all of us have done that at some stage. There is T20 World cup to look forward to, so you start rebuilding again. There is not much time to go over things that have happened in the past. It is always looking ahead in the future," Virat Kohli said at the toss.
