India Test opener Prithvi Shaw has been suspended by the BCCI for doping violations. An official release for the board stated that the teenager had provided a urine test as a part of the anti-doping testing procedure during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this year.

The sample was found to contain Terbutaline - a substance that is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Shaw was charged with violating doping rules under the BCCI Anti-Doping Rules, and was suspended for eight months.

The player stated that he took the drug because of consuming over-the-counter cough syrup for his cough. The board found his explanation satisfactory and ruled out the possibility of Shaw using it to enhance his performances. Based on this, the BCCI back-tracked the date of consumption of the drug and suspended him till November 15.

He will be allowed to train with the team and use the facilities from September 15, 2019. He will not be in the fray for selection for the Tests against South Africa and the first Test against Bangladesh that starts from November 14. He was not picked for the tour to Windies as he is suffering from an injury, which he sustained during the Mumbai Premier League in May.
