The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to remove Sarfaraz Ahmed as the Test skipper. This decision comes a few days after 27 year old pacer Mohammad Amir announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. According to reports, the PCB will make a new player in charge of the side before the ICC World Test Championship. The PCB's Cricket Committee will take up this issue in the meeting scheduled on next Friday.

Earlier, Sarfaraz himself said that he wishes to continue as skipper and the final decision rests with the PCB.

He said, "It's not that I'm saying I refuse to resign. All I'm saying is the decision rests with the PCB, the same way as the decision to appoint me captain was taken by them. I'm sure they'll take the decision that's best for Pakistan."

Currently, Pakistan are placed at 7th position in the ICC Test rankings. Under Sarfaraz, Pakistan won only 4 games out of 13.

The skipper was the centre of trolls during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 as he yawned on the field in the game against India. Also, the team was questioned by fans and pundits for the lack of intent shown during the initial stages of the tournament. After the defeat against India, the Sarfaraz Ahmed led side bounced back strongly to remain in contention for a knockout spot till the final group game. Eventually they missed out on a knockout berth due to low Net Run Rate (NRR) and finished at fifth place in the points table.

With the ICC World Test Championship all set to begin in a few days, the PCB will look for a young and able player who could lead the side for a longer duration and carry on the legacy of Pakistan cricket left behind by the likes of Imran Khan.
