MS Dhoni's jersey number 7 will not be worn by Indian players in the ICC World Test Championship
The ICC has introduced the World Test Championship to give more relevance to Test Cricket across the globe. It will see players carrying jersey numbers just like in ODIs and T20Is. A senior BCCI official has said that it is highly unlikely that MS Dhoni's jersey number would be chosen by any other Indian player
The ICC has introduced the World Test Championship and it is all set to kick off with the Ashes starting August 1. It will also be the first Test series where the players will have jersey numbers. For Team India, the World Test Championship will commence from 22nd August when they take on the West Indies at Antigua. The move to conduct the longest format of the game in this format is an effort by the ICC (International Cricket Council) to popularize the game and engage the fans and to prevent dead rubbers.
Sachin Tendulkar's jersey number 10 has already been "unofficially retired" by the BCCI from white-ball cricket. With MS Dhoni announcing his retirement from the longest format of the game, his jersey number 7 will also not be used in the World Test Championship.
A senior BCCI official told, "Virat is expected to wear 18 while Rohit wears 45. Most of the players will wear their respective ODI and T20 numbers. Since MS is no longer playing Test cricket, jersey number 7 is available but there is very little chance that any of the players will wear it. People relate jersey number 7 with MS. The consignment of numbered jerseys will only arrive in the Carribean only after ODI series."
Dhoni, is currently representing India in the shorter versions of the game. While many have trolled the former Indian skipper for his slow knocks in the World Cup, he has still got faith from skipper Virat Kohli. He will not turn up for the ODIs and T20Is against the West Indies as he has taken a two month sabbatical to serve the Parachute Regiment under the Territorial Army where he is an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel. It would be interesting to know as to what lies ahead for MSD.
