Indian cricketers are admired, adored and respected by the fans wherever they go. People treat them like a superstar, but they also face criticism for their behavior and play on and off the field.

Previously a number of Indian players were hunted down by Indian fans and critics owing to their poor performances. In this story, we look at players who faced a lot of criticism but found out a way to handle it.

Rohit Sharma

The Hitman is one of the finest batsman in the shorter format of the game. Inspite of accumulating staggering numbers in the ODI format, he has is yet to make an impact in the Test arena. In an exclusive interview with Indian express Rohit, who was lucky enough to find a place in the Test squad, took a dig at his critics when he was quizzed on being labeled as a “talented underachiever”.

The star batsman took a dig at his critics and said “Many people have sustained their jobs by criticizing me. But I’m happy that I could help someone out in some way. I have given them a lot to talk about,”.

MS Dhoni

The former Indian skipper off late has been facing a lot of criticism for his performance on the field. But Dhoni has every time answered his critics with performance on the field. Over the years Dhoni found out a new way of handling the criticism by refraining himself from media that analyses cricket matches featuring Team India.

"The best thing I've done so far is to not watch the news or read newspapers, so that has really helped, frankly," said MS Dhoni "It's not that I don't read newspapers, it's just that the back pages are always the sports page and I try to get rid of that," he added.

Shikhar Dhawan

The left-hander missed the World Cup due to injured finger he sustained after playing just one game. Even before cementing his place in the national side, Dhawan form was always the talk of the town, but the Gabbar of Team India remained unfazed with the criticism “I am not that sort of a guy who feels the pressure. I have the ability to remain unfazed. And critics? Woh apna kaam kar rahein hain [They are doing their job]. If I don’t score runs in 5-10 games, it doesn’t mean that everything is lost. I know what kind of a player I am and what my capabilities are" he said.

“To know what is being written about me, I need to read the newspapers or watch television. I don’t do both, so what’s being discussed hardly bothers me. And as far as social media is concerned, yes I am on twitter and Facebook but I hardly use them,” Dhawan added.

Ajinkya Rahane

India's Test vice-captain was under the microscope for his dip in form ahead of Two match Test series against West Indies. Inspite of all the pressure Rahane scored a century and helped his side register victory. Following the team's victory, he said he made a conscious effort to ignore criticism directed at him for not reaching three figures in the last two years.
"I try not to get affected by criticism as it is unwanted and I can't control it. You are always happy when you make a hundred," Rahane told fellow Mumbaikar Rohit Sharma in a chat aired on 'bcci.tv'.
