Lalchand Rajput applies for Team India coach as deadline for application closes; 7 nominees in fray

Besides Rajput, Mahela Jayawardene, Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, Gary Kirsten and Robin Singh have sent in their applications. Current coach Ravi Shastri is automatically nominated as well.

Lalchand Rajput applies for Team India coach as deadline for application closes; 7 nominees in fray

Former Indian manager and current coach of Zimbabwe, Lalchand Rajput has applied for the job of the Indian cricket team's coach. Rajput is currently the coach of Zimbabwe, but has applied for the position after the ICC suspended the cricket team due to government interference. 

The deadline for the applications was till 5pm on July 30. 

The BCCI had invited applications for positions of the head coach, bowling, fielding and batting coaches after the contract of the current support staff had expired after the World Cup 2019. 

Rajput, an opener, had managed the Indian team during their victorious T20 World Cup campaign in 2007. He has also coached Afghanistan and Assam. 

The player has requested his name to be in the fray for the batting coach if he is not selected for the role of the head coach. 

Besides him, Mahela Jayawardene, Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, Gary Kirsten and Robin Singh have sent in their applications. 

Current coach Ravi Shastri is automatically nominated as well.
