India vs West Indies: Hanuma Vihari dedicates maiden Test hundred to his late father
Hanuma Vihari dedicates his maiden century to his late father who passed away when he was 12
Hanuma Vihari's 111 put India in driver's seat at the end of second day's play of the second Test in Jamaica. His sparkling hundred made sure that India posted 416 on a green wicket against quality West Indian pacers. In reply, West Indies were 87 for 7. After his knock, Vihari mentioned that it was an emotional moment for him as he dedicated his maiden Test century to his late father.
"Actually, my dad passed away when I was 12 so ever since, I have decided that when I play international cricket I want to dedicate my first hundred to him. Today is an emotional day and I hope he is proud wherever he is and I'm really happy that I achieved that."
Vihari's knock included 16 hits to the fence as he stitched together a 112 run stand with "talented" tail-ender Ishant Sharma.
"When I was batting overnight on 42, I did not sleep really well as my thoughts were obviously running on how to get a big score today. I'm happy that I could cross that three-figure mark and credit should go to Ishant as well - the way he batted. I'm really happy that I could get my first hundred, especially on those conditions. It gives me a lot of satisfaction."
Eventually, India's innings ended when skipper Jason Holder completed his 6th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Vihari's wicket was also his 100th scalp in Tests.
Vihari also lauded the West Indies for bowling well after lunch.
"I was batting at 84 during the lunchtime, then it took me hard to get to the nineties. So, obviously I was patient, they bowled well after lunch. We have to give credit to the bowlers as well. Even though we scored 416 runs that do not show the way they bowled."
In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah followed up his Antigua performance with yet another fiery spell of pace bowling as he became the third Indian to perform a Test hat-trick after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan. He dismissed Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase in the 9th over to achieve this feat. At the end of the day, he picked up 6 wickets giving away just 16 runs off his 9.1 overs.
