The hosts lasted less than 24 overs in their first innings, which was also their shortest innings ever at home. Ireland's Andrew Balbirnie top-scored on Day 1 with 55, which was also the only fifty from either side in the game thus far. Sam Curran, Stuart Broad and debutant Olly Stone picked up three wickets each for England.
Ireland, playing their first Test against England, were on fire in the first half of the day as Tim Murtagh led the way to pick up a five-wicket haul. It left the world champions England with only 85 on the board after the first innings.
The Irish batters, on the other hand, put in a better display as they batted for four-and-a-half hours. In comparison, England had been bowled out in just over two hours after Joe Root won the toss.

The game is the only Test match that England will play before the Ashes start from next week at Edgbaston.
