England vs Ireland, Day 3 - England win as Ireland all out for 38; Chris Woakes takes 6 wickets
Ireland were all out for only 38 - the seventh lowest Test total - in the fourth innings, to give India a 143-run victory
England bowled out Ireland for only 38 runs in the fourth innings to win the four-day Test match at Lord's by a margin of 143 runs.
The Irish, playing only their third Test match, needed 182 for a historical win, but they were demolished by some fine bowling from Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad. Under overcast conditions, and with plenty of assistance, the two bowlers bowled unchanged, and took all 10 wickets between them. While Woakes picked up 6, Broad walked away with 4.
At one stage in the Ireland innings, three wickets fell for no runs, with the last nine wickets falling for only 18 runs, as William Porterfield's men registered the seventh lowest total in Test history, and the lowest at London.
The Irish innings lasted only 94 balls - the second-shortest Test innings, and the shortest in 95 years.
However, the win should not mask England's inabilities with the bat. In the first innings, the side had been all out for only 85, and it needed a 92 from number 11 player Jack Leach in the second innings to help them post a fighting total. With the Ashes less than a week away, England can ill-afford to have a woeful top-order and it remains interesting to see who makes it to the Ashes squad. The England team for the series against Australia will be announced on Saturday.
