Ashes 2019: Jofra Archer caught smiling after hitting Steven Smith on the neck with a bouncer; slammed by fans
Steve Smith had to go for scans after being hit on the neck with a nasty bouncer from Jofra Archer. The bowler was seen laughing, instead of checking on the batsman, which has not gone down with fans
Steve Smith, who scored his seventh successive Ashes 50+ score in the second innings of the Lord's Test, had been forced to retire hurt at 80 after being hit on the neck by a nasty bouncer from Jofra Archer. The Englishman bowled a hostile spell on debut, even bowling above 96 miles an hour.
Archer hit Smith's uncovered neck with a fast delivery, and the batter fell face forward on the ground. He did receive on-field treatment by both the English and the Aussie medical staff. Smith had to leave the field but returned 40 minutes later and was eventually out for 92.
During this incident when Smith fell, Archer was seen laughing with fellow English cricketer Jos Buttler. The fast bowler had earlier also hit Smith on the forearm. Archer's attitude and ungentlemanly behaviour was called out by fans on Twitter, who were amazed at his lack of sportsman spirit. Some even reminded Archer of what Phillip Hughes - who passed away after being hit on the head in 2014 - had to go through.
@JofraArcher doesn't deserve to play on international level with such poor attitude and lack of sportsmanship. #flog #Ashes19
What a hero... Yo, Jofra, might want to watch this before laughing after hitting someone. This is the teammate of the guys you are playing... https://t.co/VWvQXVrgau
Walking away & laughing after hitting Steve Smith in the neck.
Disgraceful @JofraArcher. #Ashes
Jofra Archer not checking on Steve Smith after the nasty blow on the latter’s neck but laughing instead, says a lot about him as a sportsman.
I hope,he gets a taste of own medicine soon.
