Saurabh Pandey elated to play Jamal-ud-Din Yaqut in 'Razia Sultan'
The long wait to finalise the actor for the role of 'Jamal-ud-Din Yaqut' in Siddharth Kumar Tewary's 'Razia Sultan' seems to be over. Sources say that actor Saurabh Pandey has been roped in to play the part.
Saurabh has previously featured in shows like 'Tere Mere Sapne' and 'Ganga Ki Dheej'. Apparently, Navi Bhangu was also in the reckoning, but the makers have preferred Saurabh for the role. Yaqut is the male lead but it will be a love triangle for now. How the story flows will depend on the viewers' feedback.
Yaqut was an African Siddi slave-turned-nobleman, who was a close confidante of 'Razia Sultan', the first female monarch of the Delhi Sultanate in India, who is speculated to have been her lover.
Saurabh informed,"Role of Jamal-Ud-Din-Yaqut is a historical character also the Love of Razia as per history, Dharmendra ji had played this role opposite Hema ji in the film Razia Sultana. Yaqut was African slave. I have never done a historical show but have done similar costume drama 'Shaurya aur Suhani' on star plus. Also, as an actor whatever comes to my plate first, I go for it. But I am also selective about my work. This is something what I so wanted to do. The character has many shades and is super powerful. I have put on some size for this role. You need to be little on the bigger side for this role. I know basic sword fighting which I learnt during my second show ‘Shaurya aur Suhani’. So that came quite handy"
Saurabh has done a lot of research about Yaqut and Razia on Wikipedia and whatever sources he came across as he loves to do homework on the characters he plays else, he gets afraid that the character will not look real.
