The Big B, Jaya To Watch New Zanjeer
It’s going to be one helluva evening of déjà vu and nostalgia when the Big B and Mrs Bachchan, both very close to director Apoorva Lakhia would watch what Lakhia has done with the couple’s career-making 1973 film Zanjeer.
Though it’s all hush-hish at the moment Lakhia has convinced the Bachchans to watch his interpretation of Zanjeer, in spite of all the copyright controversies that writers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar have generated
Says a source close to the project, “Apu(director Lakhia) never embarked on the remake of Zanjeer without the Bachchans’ approval and blessing. In fact Bachchan Saab was all set to make a token appearance in the film when all the unsavoury legal wangles regarding the copyright issue surfaced. That’s when Bachchan Saab discreetly sidestepped the remake issue and kept mum about Apu’s interpretation of Zanjeer.
Now we hear Bachchans would be checking out the remake for Apu’s sake. Lakhia is one of Abshishek Bachchan’s closest friends.
The Big B is all praise for Ramcharan. “Ramcharan Teja is a most accomplished star and I am certain, from the few rushes that have been shown to me, that he has done a tremendous job.”
Speaking on the neo-Zanjeer the Big B says, “I cannot hold opinion on it. At times your involvement in a particular film propels you to think that they should remain untouched. And at times when you see the finished remake you appreciate its ingenuity. But the desire to remake does not rest with me. It is the decision of those that may or may not hold its remake rights. There are so many past examples that impress upon you , for example Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas a remake of Bimal Roy’s film, Mehboob Khan’s Mother India remade from Aurat. Kurosawa’s Japanese film The Seven Samurai became The Magnificent Seven in Hollywood, and so on.”
