So Salman Khan’s much awaited, Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo’s music is out. Listening to the tunes of Sooraj Barjatya’s upcoming film, which intends to be a throwback to the ’90s, one expects a more than mediocre soundtrack. But there is not much to write home about the monotonous tracks. Looks like Himesh Reshammiya, the film’s music director, has tried hard to come out with a musical album, but has not been able to deliver the same! On one hand, this year has seen melodious melodies from the 90s era, in songs like ‘Moh Moh ke Dhaage’ etc, however, this album is rather dominated by dated sounds.

This one is a long nine-track album by Rajshri, beginning with the song ‘Prem Leela.’ The vocal to the track has been lent by singers Vineet and Aman Trikha. Ram-Sita-Raavan story is narrated in a musical manner in this track which is designed for all age groups and might become a popular tune, owing to the festive season. Next we have the title track itself, ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’, sung by Palak Muchhal. The song starts off on a promising note before the not-so-impressive main song kicks in. Then is ‘Jalte Diye’, which has a nice, endearing melody.  Harshdeep Kaur, Anwesha Dutta Gupta, who sounds a lot like Shreya Ghoshal, have managed to make this one a decent hear in the average album.

However, the most 90s sounding track in the album is, ‘Aaj Unse Milna Hai’ and is probably the best in the entire lot. This song will remind you of Kumar Sanu or Udit Narayan era. Sung by Shaan, this is a true Rajshri style number. The lyrics of the song are in a conversational mode, as it were in, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. The song also has a female-led version sung by Palak Muchhal and Aishwarya Majumdar titled ‘Aaj Unse Kehna Hai.’ 'Jab Tum Chaho', is a decent love song, and it is interesting to hear an unconventional mix of singers in this one with Mohammed Irfan, Darshan Raval and Palak Muchhal coming together in one track.

‘Tod Tadaiyya’ song features Neeraj Sridhar and Neeti Mohan who does well as singers, but giving this song more of a ‘tadkta-bhadakta’ feel and making it sound more on the lines of an item number, a rare one, from the Rajshri camp! Himesh has finally sung a song in the album,‘Bachpan Kahaan’, which looks ideal for a lullaby setting. :)

However, credits to Himesh, for the fact that he has given an opportunity to singers which were discovered on reality-singing competitions. But when it comes to the final word on PRPD music -- it fails to meet the expectations one has from a Rajshri’s album. An average soundtrack by Himesh Reshammiya, which is well executed only in patches, a song or two, is not one of his best works in his musical career. However, Irshad Kamil does deliver the kind of lyrics that goes well with the ethos of a Rajshri album. But PRDP music is nowhere close to the league of Rajshri’s gems; Hum Aapke Hain Kaun or Maine Pyaar Kiya.

Not much of a musical homecoming for Prem aka Salman. A 6/10 score for the album.
