You wouldn't believe these outlandish foods Indians love to eat!
All cultures have their own absurd food items they love. India has its own share too and you will be shocked!
All around the world, all cuisines have their own share of bizarre food items that the people of the country actually find quite normal to eat. While hearing about the Chinese eating insects makes bile rise to our throat, our own country too boasts of eating some of the weirdest things ever, which makes us wonder who gets the idea of cooking that stuff in the first place. Here is a compilation of the craziest things people have as food in India.
Eri Polu
Eri Polu is a signature Assamese dish. It is made from the coccoon left after the silk worm has secreted silk. This pupa is further boiled and cooked, which makes it extremely soft. This melting texture and intriguing taste make it so famous despite the slightly freaky ingredients used.
Dog Meat
This dish is famous in Nagaland and Mizoram and we are slightly horrified. It is difficult to believe that people can eat man's best friend. We don't know how that tastes and would certainly not want to.
Black Rice
A popular food preparation in Manipur, Kerala and the hills of North Bengal, Black Rice is full of health benefits. It is miraculously black when harvested and turns purple when cooked. It is best enjoyed with coconut milk.
Phan Pyut
In North East India, people not only enjoy rotten potatoes but find it delicious as well. Potatoes, on ripening are not harvested but are left to rot. Once they're spoiled, they're eaten either raw with spices or cooked.
Chaprah
One of the quirkiest items on this list is probably this chutney consumed by the tribal population of Chhatisgarh. It is made of red ants and their eggs, and is liked for its crunchy flavour. Ouch.
Sorpotel
Also known as Chourikous, Sorpotel is a Portuguese dish made from pork offal. Offal stands for the organs and entrails of any animal, which is otherwise discarded as waste material. That really sounds absurd...
Nankham
The Garos of Meghalaya make this seemingly normal dish of dried fish, only that they add blackened ash, which is left after burning out the fire, as an ingredient. The dish is said to have great taste, apart from the pungent odour.
