What to eat during high blood pressure and low blood pressure?
If you have fluctuating blood pressure, it could be a cause of concern. Here’s are the food items you should eat to control both, high blood pressure and low blood pressure.
Normal blood pressure is in the range of 120/80 mm Hg. In case, your blood pressure is consistently high or low for a long period of time, it can directly affect the heart and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Having an abnormal blood pressure could be due to several reasons that are out of control. A person’s age, family history, gender and race are some of the main contributing factors. Nevertheless, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, daily exercise and wholesome diet can help control it to a large extent. Health experts recommend the intake of foods rich in nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, fiber. It is also said that foods with extremely high sodium content should be consumed in a limited amount.
Dr Sandeep Patil, Chief Intensivist and Physician, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, recommends the essential food items necessary to maintain a stable blood pressure count.
To control high blood pressure:
“Consume a healthy diet rich comprising of whole grains, fruits, berries (especially blueberries), vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and fish like salmon or mackerel, which are a rich source of Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Also, one must avoid consumption of salty foods,” Patil says.
To control low blood pressure:
“Drink plenty of water each day, consume a little more salt, and most importantly eat small frequent meals,” Patil says.
A specific diet plan focussed on maintaining a normal blood pressure is also immensely helpful. The eating plan inclusive of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.
