Vasant Panchami 2021 is celebrated on February 16. This is generally celebrated on the fifth day of the month of Magha in Hindu calendar which is mostly around late January or February. This festival marks the beginning of spring season, the king of all seasons.
Meaning of Vasant Panchami
This festival is always celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm in India. Apart from welcoming the spring season, we also worship the Goddess Saraswati on Vasant Panchami, who is the goddess of knowledge, music, arts and learning. In South India, this day is known as Sri Panchami.
History of Vasant Panchami
According to Hindu mythology, Brahma is the creator of this universe. So, one day, he wanted to see this creation with his own eyes. But he was disappointed with the silence and loneliness of the earth. Then he created an angel with his powers. The angel had a harp in her hand, so Brahma requested her to play something. Then she blessed people on the earth with her voice. This angel then came to be known as Saraswati or Veena Vadini.
Significance of Vasant Panchami
This day is celebrated as an ode to Goddess Saraswati. She is the symbol of prosperity and Vasant Panchami is one of the most auspicious days to get married as well. Since yellow is considered to be the favourite colour of the goddess, people like to celebrate this day wearing yellow-coloured outfits.
