Tips and tricks to ace the social media game

Let's face it, if you've made it to this article, you enjoy social media. You're just like us, oscillating between the various apps on your phone. Who cares if Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook all do the same thing? That won't stop us from posting the same selfie on all platforms now, will it? The more likes, followers and comments, the better. If you're unapologetically self-absorbed and you aspire to be a social media sensation, we've got just the right hacks. Thank us later... 

1. Timing 

Timing is everything. Social media experts have spoken and you should take notes! Studies show that most engagement happens between 9 to 10 am and post 8 pm. If you post something during these hours, your bound to get more hits than at any other hour. 

2. Picture quality

You might find yourself looking highly attractive in a certain picture but avoid posting it if the quality of the image is bad. Grainy, pixelated pictures and too many filters will ruin your post and won't get you much traction.

3. Be consistent but not annoying

Being consistent is key. Don't post something and then disappear for a week. A proper posting frequency is important to build followers and while posting two pictures a day is fine, make sure not to be all over a person's feed. Avoid over-posting, it can get annoying and cause people to unfollow you.

4. Video is King

Video is the all new way to go! Break the monotony of photos and post a video as often as you can. Talk, document, interact. This will give people a clearer insight into your life, interests etc. and will help build a personal connect. Make the videos as entertaining as possible so that people keep coming back for more!

5. Be aware of what's trending

If you're a social media enthusiast, it's important for you to be updated at all times. Find out what's trending and ensure your hashtags are topically relevant.

6. Return the favour

Don't be a snob. Visit other people’s accounts and follow back. It’s one of the best ways for them to notice your account as you’ll pop up in their notifications. 

7. Engage 

Don't rely on just your posts to attract new people. Get involved and interact in big conversations happening around. Reply to comments and engage with as many people as you can. 

8. Be an informer not a meformer

Meformers are people who only post content revolving around themselves. Informers will tell you something fresh, give you news and leave you with something you didn't know before. Studies show that informers have twice the number of following than the former.

9. The perfect profile picture

First impressions are everything on social media and a good display picture is a must. By good, I mean a clear and preferably professionally taken one. Avoid using mirror selfies, group photos and over edited stuff (No Snapchat filters, please!)

10. An interesting bio

Last but not the least, an interesting bio is an absolute must. It is the first thing people see and you don't want to come across as super boring and just..blah.. ! Make it real, detailed and fun. If your display picture and bio look inviting, your sure to get a follow request.
