Just like dogs, cats can be our furry friends too. A lot of people adopt cats because not only are they cute, they are also extremely self sufficient animals. Cats can look after themselves, clean up after themselves and spend long hours without having any need for human interaction. They do not take up space either so they are the perfect pets to get if you are travelling, spend hours away from home for work or if you have a small apartment. They are also the perfect pets for bachelors due to these very same reasons. Nonetheless, you should be aware of the proper ways to feed your cat. Inadequate or improper nutrition will prove detrimental to your cat’s health and make them sick.

1. Cats have specific nutritional needs

Nutrients such as taurine is a must-have in your cat’s diet. A deficiency in taurine may result in a number of conditions that will affect their heart and eye health.

2. Make sure they get enough protein

Did you know that adult cats require approximately 44 per cent more protein than adult dogs? A high protein diet must also be accompanied by essential amino acids, essential fatty acids and vitamins such as A and D.

3. They can be picky eaters

Cats are infamous for being picky eaters so it is important to make sure their food is delicious, good looking and aromatic. Feeding them in a pretty container can sometimes do the trick too!

4. They should be given small meals

Unlike dogs, cats prefer having small meals throughout the day. So make sure that the food is nutritionally balanced with the right nutrients in adequate amounts.

5. A vegetarian diet is not for cats

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means a vegetarian diet is incapable of meeting their dietary needs. If you don’t cook meat at home, get you cat kibbles that have non vegetarian content in them.
