Pet Parenting: 5 warning signs that your pet could be OVERWEIGHT

It’s not only us humans who are at a risk of being overweight. Research shows that almost 50% of pet dogs and 60% of pet cats are overweight. Sedentary lifestyle, overfeeding and the absence of exercise is making our pets unhealthy and exposing them to a host of diseases. While a cuddly pet is certainly adorable and delightful to play around with, yet you should not ignore your pet’s weight issues. Pets that are overweight can experience the same health consequences as humans. They are at an increased risk of illnesses such as diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, arthritis, and high blood pressure. Here are a few easy ways to spot if your pet is having weight troubles and intervene for the same. If weight troubles have lead to other discomforts for your pets, you should take them to a vet right away.

1. The scale says they have gained weight

If you aren’t really sure about your pet gaining weight, put them on a scale. A weighing scale is the easiest way to determine if your pet has gained (or lost) weight. Weigh your pet every few months and keep a record of their weight. Plan their diet and exercise accordingly.

2. Your pet is having trouble breathing

If a short walk or a few minutes of exercise leaves your pets panting and huffing, they could be experiencing trouble breathing. One of the reasons for laboured breathing could be weight gain. Overweight pets are often unable to breathe with ease. You should see your vet immediately if this occurs.

3. Your pet has lost interest in physical activities

When you pet is overweight, they become lethargic. A drain in energy means they are no longer interested in playing with you, running around or fetching the toys they love. A general  mood of disinterest can also lead to behavioral changes.

4. They have difficulty getting around

The excess weight prevents your pet from doing even the simplest of activities such as climbing in and out of bed, walking short distances or being unable to climb the stairs. Though these can be the symptoms of other medical conditions, it’s best to have a look at their weight first.

5. They have a visibly thicker waistline

If the abdominal area of your pet suddenly seems heavy and drooping, it could mean they are overweight. When they gain weight, the waistline of your pet will become visibly thicker and the outline of their ribcage will disappear.
