Getting a pet? THESE are the things to keep in mind before you adopt one

At least once in our life, the thought of getting a pet has crossed our minds. Having a pet not only makes us happy, they also teach us several valuable reasons such as being responsible, emotionally mature and how to love selflessly. In fact, children that grow up with pets are also found to be more emotionally intelligent, expressive and responsible than their counterparts. Pets often transcend to being our family and they love us without expecting anything from us. While having a pet is all pros, you still have to inspect if you are ready to adopt an animal yet. Bringing a pet into your home can significantly alter your routine and lifestyle, so it’s important to be fully equipped before you head over to adopt  a furry friend. Read on to find out if you tick off most requirements from our checklist!

1. Ask yourself why you want a pet

Getting a pet shouldn’t be an impulsive decision. Carefully consider why you would want to welcome a pet into your life. Getting a pet means making a commitment, so make sure you are up for it!

2. Get an animal that matches your lifestyle

Don’t adopt a pet just because you fancy it. Remember that pets need our attention and most of us spend long hours away from home at work or traveling. If you don’t have enough space or time to take your pet for a walk, consider getting an animal that feels comfortable in small spaces, can do without a lot of exercise and is mostly self sufficient.

3. Have a look at your finances too

Adopting an animal isn’t the end all of pet parenting. You will have to spend sufficiently on your pet’s dietary needs, veterinary visits, grooming and health emergencies. You may want to put off adopting a pet if you are strapped for cash.

4. You will have to make sufficient lifestyle changes

If you love partying late into the night, traveling constantly or moving often, you might have to limit these when you get a pet. Pets need stability and demand their owner’s attention. You would need to spend adequate time in their company and if you do plan to travel, make sure you find a reliable pet-sitter before booking tickets.

5. Find a vet before you adopt a pet

As soon as you get a pet, you will have to vaccinate them and consult a vet for their dietary needs. Pets need to go to vet frequently, including whenever there’s a health emergency. Find a vet close to your home and see if you can afford one before you even consider getting a pet.
