Most people don't remember when they started biting nails. But the phenomenon usually begins at an extremely young age. If not put to an end, it can continue to be a habit even as one grows old. Sometimes nail biting can be an indication for emotional or mental stress and can be a sign of nervousness. It is also done by people when they are bored, feeling insecure, anxious or even hungry in some cases.

Either way, the habit is not good and needs to be put to an end for the following reasons:

Biting nails can make you sick. Hands are the main place where germs tend to settle from everything that you have touched. You are putting those very fingers into your mouth multiple times a day and directly transporting the germs to your digestive system and increasing your chances of falling terribly sick.

Biting nails can make them grow back in a weird shape. The sharpness of teeth can damage the tissues around your nails and destroy the natural way in which they grow giving one abnormal looking nails.

Biting nails can ruin your jaw/smile as you can chip your teeth by constantly biting your brittle nails.

Ways to stop biting nails:

Biting nails is a habit that cannot be stopped overnight. But put these steps into practice to get rid of the problem forever.

Keep your mouth and hands busy

Munch on something light through the day like gum. Keep your hands busy - keep clicking on a pen or keep a stress ball close by to help you take your stress out.

Get a manicure
