In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, psychologist Krishna Dewani expressed her views on the importance of therapy and when one should consult a therapist. She said, "Therapy gives one the professional support and guidance needed when suffering from a mental health issue/disorder."

Depression: How to know if you need to see a therapist?

Depression is one of the common disorders that people face across the world. The health issue interferes with daily work and also impacts productivity negatively. Many do not know that it can also influence other health conditions as well. There are many causes of depression and some of them are family history, childhood trauma, brain structure, medical conditions such as ADHD and drugs & alcohol misuse.

The symptoms of depression are easily missable and people ignore it by considering as 'just a sad phase'. But one has to understand that depression is more than just feeling unhappy. If you are feeling down and persistently sad for several weeks then you could be suffering from depression. So, if you think you are suffering the same then you should seek help from a therapist/psychologist. Yes, apart from anti-depressants, another way to curb the same is therapy sessions. 

In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, psychologist Krishna Dewani expressed her views on the importance of therapy and when one should consult a therapist. She said, "Therapy gives one the professional support and guidance needed when suffering from a mental health issue/disorder. A person must consult a psychologist when there are symptoms seen by self or closed ones. For example, in the case of depression, if a person feels dull, unmotivated and solitary all day for weeks together; if there are changes and irregularities in sleeping and eating patterns; if the individual is unable to perform routine tasks and chores, then one ideally should seek a therapist's appointment."

Apart from therapy, she also revealed some of the home remedies. She stated how regular exercise, yoga, and meditation, being social, interacting with family members about the situation, doing household chores, keeping oneself busy by involving in hobbies are some of the best ways to fight depression. But she also opined that if the individual is severely depressed then he or she should consult a psychologist.

When asked about how one can prevent depression to the same she said one should indulge in positive self-talk on a daily basis instead of negative ones. You should avoid saying the following statements:  "I can't do anything in life", "I am not worthy", "I am alone" and "I have nobody" among others. She said that these should be transformed into "I am confident that I can do it", "I am blessed with a loving family" and "I can achieve my goals". Also, one should open up about one's problems and issues with closed ones.
