5 Tips to maintain proper Intimate Hygiene

Let’s talk about intimate hygiene, considering it to be one of the prejudices and taboos in a country like India, women generally do not prefer talking about intimate hygiene. We all go throw a whole lot of ideas to inarticulately express our exasperation towards the same! Well! It is quite significant to know how to actually take care of it rather than suffer! 

To maintain perpetual hygiene of the intimate area because it can affect your body’s health too. One of the major aspect to be considered in intimate hygiene is to maintain the PH balance level of 3.5 to 4.5. Any change is such pH level prescribed can lead to troubling symptoms and infections. 

Here are some tips to maintain proper intimate hygiene 

1. Washing Your Genital Areas 

Washing your genital areas every day with water to maintain the pH balance. Or a pH balanced hygiene wash/ hygiene wipes containing lactic acid. Avoid using any chemical-based product such as soap, deodorants, body wash etc. as they might irritate the pH balance of the intimate area. After washing the intimate area, pat dry with a clean towel avoids excessive cleaning and excessive use of tissues. 

2. Wear the Right Clothes 

Clothing is often neglected by almost all of us when it comes to the awareness of how it affects our intimate hygiene. One should prefer cotton undergarments and loose clothing, avoid what feels extremely tight fitted. Avoid wearing extremely skinny jeans, tightly fitted thongs etc. so often. Undergarments made of synthetic fabrics should also be avoided especially at the time of an ongoing infection. Use pure cotton, clean garments and should be changed every day. 

3. Sanitary Napkins 

In the midst of the menstrual cycle, the sanitary napkins should be changed every 4-6 hours, or as frequently as they are needed to be. Quite stretched exposure to the sanitary napkin can irritate the skin and highly disturb the pH level. Use only high quality and colours approved sanitary napkins, avoid using a cloth or any other material. Menstrual cups and tampons also can be considered as a good option but should be taken the best care of what suits you the best. 

4. Diet and Nutrients

A proper balanced and healthy diet if followed can help in building vaginal immunity, and preventing infections. Consuming more meals that contain lactic acid, such as yoghurt, milk, cheese etc. can help to prevent infections in genital areas and can also aid to treat if any ongoing. To maintain intimate hygiene through diet, one can also drink an adequate amount of water in a day.

5. Visit Your Gynaecologist 

You do not have to visit your doctor frequently or weekly, but apart from your regular check-up it is good to get your vaginal health check-up once a while, and also there shouldn’t be any hesitation in visiting a gynaecologist if you experience any imbalance, strange discharge, or frequent irritation because it might lead to infections you never were aware of.  Visit your gynaecologist and make sure that your pH is maintained. 

Also, keep these tips in mind to maintain the prescribed pH on daily basis.
