Cloaking means to hide, cover or disguise something. Cloaking is another dating trend. Cloaking takes ghosting a notch higher. In today’s digital world, millennials enjoy using and experimenting with dating apps which allow them access to other singles who are up for hook-ups or dates. But this online dating world can plant seeds of all kinds of worries and fears in the hearts of people. This digital dating trend is another one of those seeds. It can plant fear of cloaking.
Cloaking is when the person you met online stands you up for a date and then proceeds to block off all communications with you. They disappear from all apps and un-match you or block you from all social media apps or websites. While you were dressing up for your date this person was busy cutting off all communication!

What is cloaking and what impact does it leave?

Cloaking can plant seeds of insecurity deep down inside your heart. The next time you meet someone on a dating app you won’t be very open to meeting them for a date. After all, no one fancies being stood up for no reason.
Moreover, it’s pretty humiliating. It makes your face burn up and turn red due to embarrassment. Something like this makes you lose all faith in people and the worst part is that this person who is the root cause of all this has disappeared off the face of the earth and there is no way you can reach out or talk to them. You’ve been talking for weeks together but suddenly they have disappeared and stood you up without any reason or any communication, for that matter. It is the worst way anyone could be rejected.

Why does cloaking happen?

A person who resorts to cloaking usually does it because they fear confrontation. Chances are that such a person could be dealing with a recent heartbreak and fears forming any sort of emotional connection or simply regrets trying to move on. They could be struggling with their inner selves. Another reason could be because they simply got bored or lost track of the conversation. But cloaking isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It may come in handy if you’re dealing with a particularly aggressive person who sends you angry messages or who may be cyberstalking you. Cloaking is healthy as long as you do it in order to protect yourself from harassment.
