“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind,” Rudyard Kipling said. Without words, all else will fail. Among the negative problems, most relationship problems stem from the father and the mother of all other problems: poor communication. Either it is the inept settings of the place of meeting, the outright denial for the need of communication or being unopen about the conflicts or arguments brought up by one partner.

Most relationships work on a give-and-take basis. This phenomenon can work out both ways, positively and negatively. One can easily feel helpless, victimized and unreactive which lead the way to dishonesty or even, unconventional forms of infidelity. Good communication helps humour each other smoothly, staying grounded and realistic, and most of all, loss of toxic and negative feelings of insecurity, jealousy, defensiveness. After all, a relationship is a collaboration more than anything else.

If you feel your communication has come to a stagnant mode and are wondering what to do to make it work, here are some solutions.

Be open-minded

It is essentially important to be open to suggestions or thoughts. Listening to your partner’s opinions can help a great deal in shaping up your relationship.

Arguments are healthy

If there’s a problem in your relationship and you try to steer clear of it by not talking about it, you’re only making space for more problems in the future. Talk, discuss and even argue. Fight if you must and then make it up to your partner. It’s the only way to know more about each other and solve existing issues.

Text, call or send a snap

In the digital era, there are a thousand ways to stay in touch with people. So, if you’re in a long distance relationship or aren’t together with your partner for long hours, make sure you drop in a text, take time to call or just send a picture to bring a smile on their face.

While these may help you move in the right direction, also remember to understand their emotions through their actions or expressions more than their words. As Peter F Drucker said: “The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said.”
