A secret form of emotional abuse is gaslighting. Gaslighting is the form of abuse where a person manipulates you in such a way that you start to doubt your own self and sanity. This gives them more power and control over you and allows them to take advantage of your vulnerable situation. It makes you doubt your sanity and your reality. You may not be able to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not. They create another reality for you and isolate you. They make it difficult for you to seek help and understand what’s going wrong with your life. This how you can spot signs of gaslighting and find your way out.

1. Your abuser blatantly lies. They say obvious lies and make you feel uncertain and unsure of things. They use this to create self-doubt.

2. They deny everything you say and remember. They make you question your memory and make it impossible for you to prove your point. It makes you wonder if your partner may be right.

3. They use your loved ones against you. They find issues with everything and everyone you love. They make you distance yourself from them and make it difficult for you to be happy with the things or people you love.

4. They break you down and then help you pick yourself up. They do this to build trust and make you dependent on them. They bind you with their “love” and “care”.

5. They make you unstable and uncertain. They make you doubt the truth and your memories and make you feel like you are losing your mind. They create confusion and doubt in your mind.

6. They make you believe that the world is against you and everyone is lying and trying to hurt you. This helps them isolate you and keep you bound to them.
