Stomach ulcers or gastric ulcers are the painful sores in the stomach lining and it’s a type of peptic ulcer disease. Stomach ulcer occurs when the thick layer of mucous is reduced. This mucous protects our stomach from the digestive juice. This allows the digestive acids to eat the tissues in the stomach lining causing the ulcer.

When stomach ulcer occurs, then you should get it treated right away with proper medications, otherwise, it may become severe. So, here are the symptoms and causes of this disease and how to prevent it.

There are several symptoms associated with stomach ulcer but they depend on the severity of the ulcer. The most common symptom of it is a burning sensation or pain in the middle of your abdomen- between the chest and belly button. This will become more intense if you have an empty stomach and last for several hours. But along with it, there are some other symptoms, like:

Pain in the stomach

Weight loss

Unwilling to eat because of the pain

Nausea or vomiting

Feeling full easily

Bloating

Acid reflux

Heartburn

Anaemia

Dark coloured stools

Causes of stomach ulcer

1.If Helicobacter pylori bacteria cause inflammation then this may lead to stomach ulcer. This bacterium lives in the mucous layer that covers and protects the tissues in the stomach lining.

2.Regular usage of pain killers can cause this condition like ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, ketoprofen etc.

3.Regular consumption of spicy foods, excess stress, smoking, alcohol can also cause stomach ulcer.

Prevention measures

1.H. pylori bacteria can be transmitted to others through food and water and from person to person. So, wash your hands with soap and water before eating foods and have foods that are properly cooked.

2.If you take pain relievers regularly, then try to take the medications with your meals. It reduces the risk of stomach ulcer.
