Burberry burned luxury goods worth $36 million in the past year

It seems to be a common practice in the Luxury Fashion industry.

 According to The Times, Burberry has destroyed more than 36 million dollars worth of unwanted products in an effort to protect its exclusivity. Burberry, like many other luxury brands faces counterfeit products in the black market. To avoid this, the brand like many others, burns it’s unwanted stock.

While Burberry is not the only brand to do this, it admitted to burning unwanted products in the report by The Times. The statement also said that the brand uses special incinerators to “harness energy.” This claim suggests that the process is somewhat sustainable, yet, the practice is still a cause for concern.

In a statement to Teen Vogue, a spokesperson explained: “Burberry has careful processes in place to minimise [sic] the amount of excess stock we produce. On the occasions when disposal of products is necessary, we do so in a responsible manner and we continue to seek ways to reduce and revalue our waste. This is a core part of our Responsibility strategy to 2022 and we have forged partnerships and committed support to innovative organizations to help reach this goal. One example is our partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Make Fashion Circular Initiative, where we join other leading organisations [sic] to work towards a circular fashion economy.”

Sustainability in Fashion has slowly become vital to the industry, and thankfully so. From fast fashion brands who have massive textile waste and badly impact the environment and workers, the paradigm has slowly shifted to not just conscious customers but conscious producers too. Fashion houses too should find ways to recycle their products rather than burning them. Such disturbing practices bring us right back to where we started: an industry that does more harm than good.
