20 years of Sabyasachi: Kashgaar Bazaar is all things rustic and romantic with tribal yet trendy Louboutins
Sabyasachi Mukherjee hosted his grandest show yet, which drew inspiration from his first design collection and explored cultures, textiles and different crafts.
It was a night of celebration for designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and to say that his designs are one of the best, is an understatement. The designer has spent two decades to stand where he is and be recognised worldwide. He is close friends with one of the most celebrated shoe designers, Christian Louboutin and his show last night – Kashgaar Bazaar, was one that will go down in the books.
In Sabyasachi’s words, Kashgaar Bazaar was “inspired by global nomads, gypsies, prostitutes, performing artists,” and his imagination of the Silk Route. Keeping up with the theme, the sets were designed. Cactii, a flowy bohemian tent and a large alarm clock made for an impeccable setup for models to strut around in their red soled Louboutins.

The ramp saw different shades of acid burnt textiles. Mustard yellow anarkalis with blog prints, off shoulder concept sarees with the iconic mango print, polka dots and the currently trending ruffles, were reminiscent of the 90s era prints. The collection also featured a ton of patchwork of different textiles including tweed, shifted focus from what Mukherjee is known for – bridal couture. While he still uses zardozi, mirror-work and phulkari, it is now on oversized trench coats, dresses, high-waisted skirts and more, rather than lehengas and sarees.

But that’s not all! The celebrated designer even forayed into street wear by creating fanny packs with the iconic Sabyasachi logo on them, created in associated with his close friend and designer Christian Louboutin. Rainbow striped pants and colourful suede open-toe loafers were also big on the runway. Clearly, Mukherjee is expanding from bridal outfits to resort wear by perfectly mixing flamboyance and comfort. Visors and avaitors sported by the models showed us that the outfits were ready to wear for summer. Classic red-soled boots with motifs from central Asian carpets, and pom-poms also gave off bohemian and tribal energy that added an edge to the show.

The show was also inclusive and had dusky models and a plus size model who featured in his campaign, sporting Mukherjee’s outfits and Louboutin shoes on the runway.

Chunky and multi layered accessories with exquisite gemstones also added a bohemian touch to the outfits. Large layered necklaces and chunky chandelier earrings are just some of the many accessories we look forward to. The iconic Sabyasachi belt too, could not be forgotten.
The music at the show is also worth a mention. Varied trance and disco versions of iconic tunes like Choli Ke Peeche, Chamma Chamma and Nakka Mukka, with the model’s steps matching the ku-ku-ku beat, gave the show a huge energy boost.

The show ended on a high, with the designer friends doing their bit and walking the ramp, with large smiles on their faces.
