From Michelle Obama to Alia Bhatt, Prabal Gurung gets candid on fashion and more!
Pinkvilla caught up with ace American designer, Prabal Gurung at the Twitter blue room, who has visited Mumbai as he is displaying his SS17 line at Le Mill, the trunk show dates are October 26th, 27th and 28th . This Singapore-born Nepali designer is currently based in New York. Prabal has designed for everyone from Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey to Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt.
Prabal had an interactive Q&A session with his fan, where he took their questions and answered them.
When asked what he misses the most, he spoke about how he misses his family!
Prabal came to study in India and realized he can have a career in something he actually likes. The cementing of his dreams took place in India. His love for Bollywood deep rooted as a child, as he could not differentiate between Hindi films and real life! Orchestra music playing during heartbreaks, billowing sarees and dancing in the rain fuelled his imagination.
Prabal spoke about how he has designed clothes for all the A-lister Bollywood actresses like Aishwarya, Sonam, Deepika, Kareena, Alia. "The essence and ferocity in the eyes of these women influenced my designs," said Prabal.
Prabal also revealed that his favorite actress to design for is Alia as he is awestruck by her work and thinks if there is any actress who should cross over to Hollywood, it is ought to be her! He expressed how he would love to see Alia star opposite Ryan Gosling in an English movie.
Prabal has also had the opportunity to design clothes fro the first lady Michelle Obama. The designer expressed that how he was in the awe of Michelle and The President, Barack Obama.
The designer called himself as a vocal feminist, a man who engages in women's rights. He spoke of equality and how fashion as a medium should be used to empower women.
When asked who are the women he would like to dress up, he expressed he would love to design for Zady Smith, Erica Baton, and Hillary Clinton.
Prabal also spoke about diversity on the runway, not only on the basis of race and colour but also body type. He spoke about how he has launched a plus size clothing line as he noticed the longing and hesitation plus sized women face and the way they are shushed!
His new collection is colorful, fluid and feminine. On this, Prabal said, "I truly believe that fashion is a conversation starter. Dressing up is the purest sense of 'self' for a woman. You have to love yourself first to be able to love others"
