There is never a bad season for head and hair accessories. From netted hats to berets and even baseball caps, they have all had their time in fashion and have always been welcomed with open arms. But with this season, there is a new kind of headgear that models are sporting on the runway – Couture swimming caps! The silicon and cloth variations that are used to keep hair away from the face while swimming, is now one of the biggest runway trends.

Think swimming caps with ball gowns, formal dresses and blazers, military outfits, and so much more! It all began with the Autumn/Winter 2018 Valentino couture show where Pierpaolo Piccioli accessorised these caps with detailed gowns. Now, luxury houses like Chanel and Dior have taken the trend forward and are showcasing this headpiece in their Spring/Summer collections this year.

It took a lot to detract one's gaze from the magnetic performances by the all-female @MimbreAcrobats during the Dior Spring-Summer 2019 Haute Couture show, but #MariaGraziaChiuri, emboldened by the fantasy and magic of the circus had no doubts that - as here, with an exquisite multicolor basketweave silk tulle evening dress - her creations would carry the day! #DiorCouture #DiorDreamParade

The circus, like any kind of production that spends a long time on the road, sees its costumes fray and wear and gather dust. For her Dior Spring-Summer 2019 Haute Couture collection, #MariaGraziaChiuri saw the poetic romance in this idea and recreated it - with the extensive savoir-faire of the Dior ateliers, of course - in a traffic-stopping ivory taffeta gown that looks like it's been well-loved. And whoever orders one will be sure to love theirs just as much! #DiorCouture #DiorDreamParade

The cap obviously has aquatic origins and was first sported on the red carpet by Amber Heard, for the premier of Aquaman, the perfect occasion to sport a swimming cap in a perfect aquatic shade of emerald green and ivory white. Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld also designed a similar cap but in a complete white shade with encrusted rhinestones that matched well with the tulle that hung below, for his seasonal bride.

Dior’s models also sported glittery caps with beads and delicate netting that covered the model’s faces to give off a subtle yet mysterious vibe for their circus themed couture show.

The accessory that was once labelled as one of the ugliest accessories, is making it big on runways and how! Clearly, the tides have turned for swimming caps.
