The Spice Girls''Gender Justice'shirts made in Bangladesh by women who were abused and harassed
The popular band collaborated with Comic Relief to create t-shirts for gender justice. But an investigative report claims that the garments were made in Bangladesh by women who were harassed and verbally abused.
The Spice Girls came up with t-shirts for comic relief that have the line #IWannaBeASpiceGirl printed on them. The shirts were for the power-up initiative and a part of the gender justice campaign. More recently, news broke that investigations were conducted and it was found out that the shirts were made in a garment factory in Bangladesh where women earned barely 35p an hour, and were constantly verbally abused and harassed by higher-ups for not meeting the company's targets.
Once the news broke, The Spice Girls released a statement saying they were "deeply shocked and appalled" at this news. When the music gang initially partnered with the cause, they said it was important to them because the equality of people and the movement "have always been at the heart of the band."
But once news of the factory works broke, the brand's spokesperson said that they have demanded a "full explanation" and have personally funded an investigation into the working conditions at the factory where the merchadise is being made. Further, the band will also donate whatever profits are made from this campaign to Bangladesh, according to the statement.
First Monday back at work... let's get it!
These new revelations bring forward the risks that are associated with chain companies and big brands. Comic Relief - the foundation that collaborated with The Spice Girls claimed to be "shocked and concerned" about the latest developments and were not aware that the company they had collaborated with for the shirts had switched to a different supplier.
Posh Spice, said that neither she nor the girls were going on tour, back when she uploaded pictures of them hanging out together in 2018, though it didn't seem like a bad idea to her back then!
