Delhi based designer Ruchika Sachdeva wins the prestigious International Woolmark Prize 2018
Delhi based designer Ruchika Sachdeva brings India's fashion scene on the global map as she won the prestigious International Woolmark Prize 2018. Bodice is Ritika's androgynous fashion label that is basic and edgy and appeals to all young women out there.
The Woolmark Prize began in 1953 as a platform to showcase emerging fashion talent and to promote the usage of Australian Merino wool, which remains one of the country’s chief exports.
Renowned names such as Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent have been awarded this prize in the early years as designers too. The award takes place globally and gives a chance to designers from 60 countries to take part in the competition. This year, the jury comprised designer Phillip Lim, Vogue Italia Editor-in-Chief Emanuele Farneti, and models Amber Valletta and Liya Kebede, who spent the day reviewing the final collections in Florence.
Ruchika Sachdev is one of the blossoming talents of our country and when it comes to the fashion scene. Her androgynous fashion label Bodice is meant for the millennial women that are basic yet super edgy. Ruchika studied at the London College of Fashion and returned to India to launch her label Bodice. The designer uses natural dying techniques and provides employment to local Indian artisans.
As the winner of The Woolmark Prize, Ruchika won a whopping prize of $200,000. In an interview with a leading website, Ruchika shared,” You cannot become a good fashion designer by just designing good clothes. Life skills, in conjunction with good fashion design sense, are just as important”
The other winner was Matthew Miller, who has been showing at Men's Fashion Week in London for several seasons now, best known for his deconstructed and innovative take on menswear staples like tuxedos and bomber jackets.
This truly is a proud moment for India and we are thankful to Ruchika Sachdev to bring India on the global fashion map. What are your thoughts? Comment below and let us know.
