Rosa centifolia : hundred petal roses or cabbage roses are the roses that are specifically picked from Joseph Mul’s fields near Pegomas, France. The Mul family since the mid 1980’s has acquired an exclusive partnership to grow roses and jasmine for Chanel and especially Chanel No. 5. The species of these roses is prized because of its sweet, clear and honeyed scent. Joseph Mul whose great-grandfather started the farm in the early 1900s reveals that he can even identify a rose in Pegomas with his eyes shut.

Mul demonstrated the correct way of culling the rose. “One finger over, over, one finger under,” he said. “Then twist! You can hear the snap.” Once the roses bloom, the entire field needs to be harvested in two weeks. Once the roses are harvested, their oils must be extracted quickly before they start to ferment. Every 30 milliliter bottle of Chanel No. 5 is an extension of the lives of a thousand Pegomas jasmine flowers and 12 Pegomas roses.
