From gowns at the inaugural ball to giving a speech in an interesting suit, these first ladies knew (or know) how to get noticed and make an exceptional and refined statement.

1. Mamie Eisenhower (Years as First Lady: 1953-1961)

Mamie Eisenhower dressed less like a powerful first lady and more like a princess, but that's what makes her stand out the most. Her embellished gowns and fanned-out dresses created quite the statement. She also accessorized impeccably well, every accessory looked not only perfectly matched but also perfectly placed.
