If I were a judge at an awards show and there was a category for 'Most Improved in Fashion', I'd definitely, without thinking twice, hand over the trophy to Kajol.
The actress has come a long way from being 'I don't care about how I look' to making a spot for herself on all the best dressed lists at any given event. The thing I like most about Kajol is her honesty, and she spoke about it on 'Koffee With Karan' too, and how she realized that she is not the best when it comes to dressing up and decided to get a little help from her now stylist Triporna Majumder.Triporna and Kajol make a fantastic team and the consistency with Kajol has been improving with her public appearances is commendable.
Not so long ago, Kajol was all about comfort and didn't give any thought about what she was wearing any red carpet event and majorly stuck to her Indian clothes by her dear friend Manish Malhotra. Enter Triporna, and now you get to see her in a range of looks in different designers - from Sabyasachi to Prabal Gurung. Even her saree looks are no longer the usual Manish Malhotra. Check her out in new and upcoming designers like Anavilla and Ilk.
Kajol’s transformation in fashion has to be one of the most organic ones. It has somehow been very effortless. It is pretty evident that she has been working hard on it but never have I ever looked at Kajol and said to myself, “Oh! She’s trying too hard.” She knows what works for her and she dresses accordingly.
Another thing Kajol has managed to beautifully accomplish it to dress for her age and her body type. So even when she is covered up from head to toe, she makes sure that there is something interesting in her look – an eye catchy print or statement earrings/necklace. She has to make sure that she doesn’t go too young or too old with her looks and that is one hard task to master.
She has now started to enjoy fashion too. You can always see taking a fashion risk once in a while. Like the Kunal Anil Tanna look that she wore at this year’s HT Most Stylish Awards. I called the look ‘Political Chic’. An event like Most Stylish Awards is the perfect event to take a risk and do something different, so I was mighty pleased when Kajol showed up on the red carpet looking like this. It was so fresh and unlike anything you get to see on a desi red carpet.
With some good looks come a few that don’t work, but in Kajol’s case, they have been few and far in between.
Here’s what Triporna has to say about styling Kajol, “At the time when I met Kajol she had her favorites in place and didn't want to budge from them. Like she would only look at black among everything that I would line up for her and stick to only neutral shades for lips. Gradually I started trying new things choosing fresh silhouettes brighter colors and I played a lot with her hair. It worked each time fr us as her face was receptive to every kind of hairdo her skin shone in all the new colors that she had earlier stayed away from. Although she was pretty clear she didn't want to be a style icon or something she was enthusiastic to dress up and most importantly allowed me to think which was very encouraging for me as a stylist. In terms of her looks for me she is like this raw promising island which I am still exploring and the surprise continues."
