Skin care: SIMPLE skin care routine that every teen can follow

Being a teenager is very stressful. Rough time at school, boy-girl troubles and a changing body are bad enough without the added worries of a skincare routine. Like at every age, the first step of any good skincare regime is understanding your skin. During your teens, your hormone levels rise dramatically, which means your skin will become oily like never before. Thus, the main aim of your skincare regime should be all about balancing your skin and controlling oil production. The rising levels of testosterone also increase sebum (oil) production, which makes breakouts more likely as the buildup of oil blocks your pores and leads to the formation of pesky pimples and blackheads. Plus, as you go through puberty, you start to produce more keratin, a protein that protects the upper layers of your dermis, which makes your skin thicker, and therefore it contributes to blocked pores. Follow this simple skin care routine for a healthy and glowing skin!

1. Cleanse

Cleansing properly will help remove impurities and any excess oil. Start your day with a cleanser that’s targeted for your skin type. You should also cleanse your face at the end of the day to remove any makeup residue, dirt, oil, or dead skin. You can also use a cleansing oil as it will actually remove sebum more effectively since oil attracts oil.

2. Tone

Toning helps to rebalance the pH levels of your skin, which helps manage oil production. It’ll tone and tighten your pores and also help remove any lingering makeup residue.

3. Exfoliate

Chemical exfoliators containing AHAs and salicylic acid are perfect as they clean deep into your pores and dissolve the glue that holds together debris in your pores. Exfoliate two to three times a week, and be sure to be as gentle as possible.

4. Moisturise

Don’t think that you should skip moisturiser because your skin is oily. If you don’t hydrate oily skin, your skin will produce more oil in an effort to compensate for the lack of moisture. Choose a moisturizer that can replenish and hydrate without making your skin sticky.

5. SPF

It’s important to protect your skin from the sun as UV rays can cause breakouts, rashes, sunburn and early ageing your skin. Generously apply sunblock to prevent tanning and burning sensation of the skin.
