Cinnamon is a well-known spice that is extensively used in Indian cuisine. The spice is so versatile that it is used in both sweet and savory foods. It has also played a key role in traditional medicines across various cultures. Though well known for its flavor and role as condiment in cooking, its medicinal benefits have also been appreciated for centuries. For thousands of years, cinnamon has been used for aroma, its distinct flavour and its medicinal properties.

Antioxidants in cinnamon help in fighting damage caused by free radicals in the body, which are responsible for diseases like arthritis, dementia, diabetes and age-related macular degeneration. There are four different types of cinnamon - Indonesian cinnamon, Saigon cinnamon, Cassia cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon. In India, the most superior quality of cinnamon is cultivated in Meghalaya. Let us find out how cinnamon affects skin and how you can use the spice for a glowing and radiant skin.

1. Fights acne

Cinnamon has anti-fungal, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties which makes it a useful ingredient against acne and skin blemishes. Cinnamon can also help remove acne by drying the breakouts and supporting blood flow to the skin. Mix honey with cinnamon powder in the ratio of 3:1. Apply the paste to your skin and leave overnight. Wash it off the next morning and moisturise well.

2. Acts as a great moisturiser

Cinnamon improves blood flow to the surface of the skin, thus adding moisture to your skin. Mix three drops of cinnamon essential oil to a few tablespoons of petroleum jelly or olive oil. Apply it liberally to chapped skin for instant supple feeling.

3. Can hydrate chapped lips

The above mentioned mixture can be great substitute to your lip gloss or lip balm. You can also apply any regular lip gloss on your lips and gently pat a pinch of cinnamon on top. It will keep your lips hydrated and make them look plump.

4. Treats eczema

Skin that is inflamed and irritated may be suffering from eczema. Eczema leaves behind light-colored patches and cinnamon could provide relief from eczema. Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon with one teaspoon of honey and apply on the affected areas. Your skin will start to improve within a few days.

5. Gives  a brighter complexion

Cinnamon’s antifungal and antibacterial properties helps in enhancing skin complexion. Mix banana, ground cinnamon, yogurt and lemon juice and apply on your face. Leave for 15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water for bright skin.
