A good night’s sleep is not only important to maintain good health but to also ensure healthy skin and hair. But what if this very sleep is when you experience the most hair breakage? If you have color-treated, or damaged hair, you should be especially cautious about hair breakage. Using moisturizing masks, heat protectants, avoiding heat in general isn’t enough and there are plenty of ways to protect your hair even while you're sleeping.

All the tossing and turning that we do in deep slumber can actually cause more damage without you even realizing it. There’s unintentional pulling or creating friction that can seriously weaken our hair roots. If you take good care of your hair in your day-to-day life, you'll also want to make sure it's protected while you're asleep, too. If you want to make sure your hair stays as healthy and strong as possible, try these easy methods to protect your hair in bed.

1. Do not go to bed with wet hair

Our hair is at its weakest when it's wet. So when we go to bed with wet hair, we make it extra susceptible to breakage. Make sure your hair is dry before you fall asleep. Microfiber hair towels are a great way to speed up drying time without using heat!

2. Use scrunchies instead of elastic hair bands

Tie your hair with a scrunchie instead of an elastic hair band. Be careful about how you tie your hair. A too-high ponytail or bun can damage and break your hair. Sleep with a low ponytail or loose braid at the nape of your neck.

3. Brush your hair before bed

Never go to bed with tangled hair. The tangles get worse when you are asleep. Instead, brush your hair before bed so that it’s tangle-free. Use extra-soft bristles that can undo tangles without being harsh and see hair breakage getting dramatically reduced.

4. Use a silk pillowcase

Silk or satin is far more gentle on your hair than average pillowcases and will help reduce breakage.  The smooth fabric reduces friction and keeps your hair from getting frizzy.

5. Oil your hair

Right before bed is a great time to apply an oil treatment. It will condition and hydrate your hair while you sleep. Pick an oil with good vitamin E content so as to moisturize and strengthen your hair without feeling greasy.
