EXCLUSIVE: “He keeps on eating and he has acidity problems and he treats his children very badly” – Satish Kaushik
Bollywood and Television actor Satish Kaushik needs no introduction to an avid movie watcher. He has been one of the best character artists in mainstream cinema for three decades and has a wealth of talent and experience which he is all set to invest in his next promising TV outing ‘Sumit Sambhal Lega’. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla.com, the veteran actor doled out many fun facts about his character in the show, some personal tid-bits and much more.
You are returning to TV after a break of 16 odd years. What kept you busy during this long sabbatical?
I was busy with my acting assignments and directorial ventures, both national and International and also with my play ‘Salesman Ramlal’. But when I got this offer from my old friends like Deven Bhojani, Shashant Shah and Parmeet Sethi who are the directors of the show. I couldn’t refuse and so accepted the show.
Please tell us something about your character in 'Sumit Sambhal Lega'.
I play Jasbir Walia, father of Sumit Walia who is the main lead of the show. My character is modelled around a man who has spent his life in Chandni Chowk and has spent his free moments romping around the streets of Chandni Chowk, Sitaram Bazar and Old Delhi. These people come with a particular dialect and mannerisms. But now the family has shifted to Greater Kailash which is a much more Elite and Swanky area. But his language and habits are the same. He is a typical Delhite. He keeps on eating and he has acidity problems and he treats his children very badly. He even asks for rent from his younger child as he stays with them in the house but everything is in a fun manner. His relationship with his wife is very sweet, they still fight a lot. Yet, deep down we know they love each other a lot. It is a layered character and a very juicy. He is not very interested in his house or the activities happening in the house. His interests include watching his television, eating, sleeping and making comments at everyone around. He is a lazy guy and a totally lump. And he fancies himself as a man of all seasons, someone who thinks he knows everything. He can write, he is a poet, he thinks he knows photography and can also act. Basically, he thinks he knows everything. Jasbir Walia is a juicy character
Did you have to prepare for this role or it just came to you naturally?
I have been acting over 3 decades now, so I think after all these years of experience I can get into any character very smoothly. I am not like Jasbir Singh in real life but when you see me on screen you won’t be able to make out that I am acting or trying to be Jasbir Singh. On top we has the crew from American show coming over and taking care of each and every detail of the show, right from costumes to look to dialogue delivery to everything. They keep an eagle eye on minute details, which helped the character of Jasbir Singh grow leaps and bounds.
What are your expectations from the show?
I have seen the hard work that has gone behind the making of this show. Right from American guys coming and taking care of the minute things to the rehearsals to everything. We have living this show since past 8 - 9 months and hence my expectations from this show are very high. Also, this is one of its kind show so I want people to except it and love it so that Indian television get the courage to think out of the box and we see move creative shows besides saas bahu dramas.
Have you started shooting for the serial?
Yes, I am associated with this show since the past 8-9 months right from auditions, to look tests to shooting, but I would say it is very satisfying.
Do you have any favourites among the talent available in TV industry today? Please share the names of actors and actresses you like the most and why?
I don't have any favourite's as all the actors that come to the industry are all well trained in acting. But I like Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor as they are amazing actor and have a great screen presence, besides Ranveer Singh is one of the actors I like as he has immense energy that makes him stand out in crowed. I also think Tiger Shroff is great; Varun Dhawan is also one name I would like to mention. He is good looking and a brilliant actor.
