A fractured left big toe has meant that Vijay Shankar has been ruled out of the World Cup 2019. Mayank Agarwal is going to be his replacement, and will join the squad ahead of India's clash with Sri Lanka on July 6.

"Vijay sustained a non-displaced fracture of the left big toe, which will require a minimum of three weeks to heal. The injury rules him out of the ongoing World Cup," stated a BCCI media release.

Vijay was struck on the left foot by Jasprit Bumrah at training on June 20. He played the next two games for India, against Afghanistan and West Indies, with the injury initially not thought to be as serious. However, it flared up on Friday and Shankar had to miss India's game with England.

His replacement, Agarwal, was not named as a standby, but with KL Rahul's indifferent form at the top, the management chose Agarwal who could open the innings and bring some solidity at the top. Uncapped in the format, he made his Test debut at Melbourne last year.
