Veteran actor Youn Yuh Jung officially became the first-ever Korean actress to be nominated for the Acadamy Awards.
Nobody is doing it like Minari! The heart-wrenching film about a family of South Korean immigrants who try to start a new life in rural America during the 1980s has won over audiences hearts worldwide. Minari, directed by the Korean-American director Lee Issac Chung stars Steven Yeun, Han Ye Ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh Jung, and Will Patton in prominent roles.
In what can only be described as a historic moment, veteran actor Youn Yuh Jung is the first Korean person to be nominated in an acting category at the Oscars this year. She is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Soonja in the film. The talented actress who was in Canada filming for the Lee Min Ho starrer Pachinko heard about her historic Oscar nomination only when she landed in Korea. In a statement via her agency Hook Entertainment, she revealed that her manager was so emotional, that she broke down crying. Youn Yuh Jung revealed that she had to comfort her emotional manager upon hearing the good news! Sweet.
Not just that, Youn Yuh Jung revealed that she celebrated the Oscar nod with a drink all by herself. Minari and its team are up for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Steven Yeun for Best Actor and Lee Issac Chung for Best Director. The 93rd Academy Awards will be held on April 25.
