Batting first, the Sri Lankan team witnessed a poor start as their top batting order failed miserably and crumbled against the Indian bowlers. India’s Jasprit Bumrah provided two early breakthroughs to the team and helped the Men in Blue get the extra edge in the innings. The first four wickets fell quickly for the Sri Lankan batsman with none of their batters being able to put forth a score beyond 20 runs.

However, it was Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne exceptional innings against the Men in Blue that helped the team register a score beyond 250. Mathews smashed a brilliant century and helped the team gain the much needed momentum in the middle overs. He scored 113 runs in 128 deliveries with a strike rate of 88.28 which included 10 fours and 2 sixes and was the highest run-scorer for the Sri Lankan team. However, apart from Mathews, it was only Lahiru Thirimanne’s half century that helped the team to set up a respectable target.

From the Indian cricket team, it was Jasprit Bumrah who once again proved to be extremely beneficial and claimed three crucial wickets for the Men in Blue with an economy of only 3.70. Ravindra Jadeja also claimed a wicket in his first match of the tournament and ended his spell with a low economy of 4.00. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, however, despite claiming a wicket proved to be quite expensive and gave away 73 runs in his 10 over spell.

The Sri Lankan team managed to register 264/7 at the end of 50 overs at Headingley Carnegie, Leeds.
