Shakib Al Hasan rested for Bangladesh's series against Sri Lanka

It was expected that Mashrafe Mortaza would announce his retirement after the World Cup 2019, but he has been selected to lead Bangladesh against Sri Lanka later this month

The World Cup 2019 is done and dusted, and teams are preparing to play bilateral series' against each other. Bangladesh will take on Sri Lanka later this month, and the squad for the same was announced on Tuesday. Bangla skipper Mashrafe Mortaza, who was expected to announce his retirement after the edition, has been picked to lead the Bangladesh squad, while all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who had a great event, has been rested. 

Shakib scored 606 runs and picked up 11 wickets in the tournament, to emerge as one of the most lethal players in the competition. Along with Shakib, Liton Das has been rested as well. 

Fast bowler Abu Jayed was picked in the World Cup squad but did not play a game. He has been dropped. 

"We didn't make big chances from the World Cup squad here. As we don't have Shakib and Liton, we have included two players in their places and dropped one player, " chief selector Minhajul Abedin said.

In Shakib's absence, Taijul Islam has been picked, who will fulfil the role of a left-arm spinner. 


"We need a left-arm spinner so Taijul is going with the team. He is now playing in India. Anamul Haque is going there as a replacement of Liton.


"Anamul has been performing consistently in domestic matches. He is doing well in both longer versions and the ODI format. We included him keeping all these things in our mind. He is playing for A team and the performance coach gave us a positive feedback about him, and because of that we have included him in the squad."

'We didn't change the in the middle-order much so Yasir Rabbi could not get a place here. We have kept him as stand-by. We need a batsman in the top-order so we picked Anamul."

Bangladesh will play three ODIs in the island nation on July 26, July 28 and July 31.
