Akshaye Khanna and Kavita Khanna received Vinod Khanna’s award. Akshaye beamed with pride on sage as he collected the honor from Information & Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani. Akshaya Khanna told PTI, "We are really proud as a family. It is a bittersweet moment for us. I wish my father was here to receive this award. I am missing him. It is an emotional day for us."
Rahul Khanna too tweeted, “On such an emotional day—as my dad is posthumously awarded India's highest honour in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the National Film Awards & Akshaye accepts it on behalf of all of us—sharing one of my favourite photos of them both c. 1980! #tbt #throwbackthursday”
He shared an adorable photo of himself with dad Vinod Khanna.
He had earlier tweeted, “So proud to hear that my dad has been posthumously awarded India's highest honour in cinema, the #DadasahebPhalkeAward at the #NationalFilmAwards! As we approach his first death anniversary, it’s such a lovely way to celebrate his life and work because, at his core, he wasn’t just an actor but also a lifelong film fan!
Vinod Khanna passed away on April 27, 2018 after succumbing to an ailment. Son Akshaye had then said to news agency IANS, “You know... Now that he is not here with us anymore, I started to think about him from that perspective (as a star) because I have never looked at him as an actor."
