Glorius days for Shabana and Javed
Being the only couple from Bollywood who have been invited to PM Manmohan Singh's exclusive dinner for President Obama- a VVIP guest list of only 25 people that includes Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi the husband wife duo are playing down the enormity of the invite and choose instead to talk about their recent visit to the United States in different capacities.
Javed addressed AFMI in Detroit and Toronto on celebrating pluralism and participated in AMU's mushairas in Cleveland and Washington DC. Shabana was on a whirlwind tour of USA 15 cities and 16 shows of Girish Karnads play Broken Images directed by Alyque Padamsee.
Standing ovations at every single show and an additional show was added at the prestigious Ronald Reagan theatre because those who couldn't get tickets pleaded with the organisers and Shabana was sporting enough to concede inspite of the one woman show being emotionally draining.
The audience was also treated to a Q and A on stage after the shows in which Azmi was at her best..witty sparkling serious in turns..when one member in the audience said " you are the Amitabh Bachchan of female stars in India" she quipped " why don't you say Amitabh Bachchan is the Shabana Azmi of Male stars in India" there was much cheering as the women in the audience approved heartily.
The Indian Ambassador in Washington DC hosted a dinner in Shabana's honour in which he introduced her not only as a highly acclaimed actor but a committed crusader for womens rights, the under priveleged and secularism.
