Kalpana Lajmi Funeral: Shabana Azmi and Soni Razdan arrive to pay last respects to the director
Celebrated filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi known for her women-oriented films like Rudaali, Chingaari, Ek Pal and Daman passed away today morning in Mumbai. Film personalities Shabana Azmi and Soni Razdan have arrived at the funeral.
Celebrated filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi known for her women-oriented films like Rudaali, Chingaari, Ek Pal and Daman passed away today morning in Mumbai. The director was battling with kidney disease and liver failure since last year and had been undergoing treatment at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital. She has been in and out of the hospital for the last three years, according to media reports. Aged 64, Lajmi took her last breath at the hospital at around 4:30 am.
The cremation of the filmmaker will take place in some time at the Oshiwara crematorium in Mumbai. B-town celebs Shabana Azmi and Soni Razdan have arrived to pay the last respects to the talented filmmaker. Meanwhile, many film personalities are paying tribute to Kalpana Lajmi on twitter. Well, the filmmaker is known for some amazing unconventional films but since past few years, she has been away from media and public memory. Lajmi is survived by her brother and mother.

Kalpana debuted as an assistant director under the veteran film director Shyam Benegal. She debuted as a feature film director in 1986 with Ek Pal (A Moment), starring Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah.
She took a good break from films and went to direct her first television serial, Lohit Kinare (1988) starring Tanvi Azmi. She made her comeback to the cinema in 1993 with the critically acclaimed Rudaali starring Dimple Kapadia. The film received immense response and acclaims while Kapadia won National Award for Best Actress.
